May 21 - 30, 2020
9-Days of Top Level Surf Training & Perfect Waves.
Boost Your Surf Level In This Intensive Course.
The aim of this program is for each of our participants to discover new ways of preparing themselves to surf and make of it a new habit in their daily surf routine. Whether it be surf hacks introduced in the classes of ‘Power Surf’ (inspired by Ginastica Natural) or improve your stamina, as well as body and mind consciousness through Yoga. Major improvements will be achieved in 10-days - this will change the way you live ‘surfing’, and from this moment, it can only move forward.
This 10-days experience combines Surf, Yoga, Wellness & Power Surf, Body & Mind Preparation.
This surfing program is designed for:
You’ve surfed enough to be hooked with surfing. You know how to take off, start doing turns and confident with your paddling. You want to improve your basic surf maneuvers and want to start learning more advanced maneuvers. You are fit enough to spend up to 4-hours surfing a day. You may also have been surfing for years but not consistently enough to see a progression and want to see a change in your surfing.
You surf consistently since already few years. You look out for the good swells and occasionally know how to find barrels and throw a spray after a snap. You want to deepen your surf techniques to bring more flow and power in your surfing. You are ready to push your surf to the next level.

POWER SURF, YOGA, AND WELLNESS, the recipe for health and performance
While most of us may not be familiar with the term ‘POWER SURF’ – this physical flow can look like a fusion of capoeira, martial art or yoga while performing surf movements. It has been initiated by Rodrigo Machado and designed for surfers’ to assimilate surf techniques and make them easy for the body and mind to remember so it becomes instinctive while surfing.
We will practice yoga daily – exploring different types of yoga practices to relax the body after surfing but also to prepare your body to surf, avoiding injuries and enhancing your flexibility and strength.
Rodrigo Machado – Surf Coach and Founder of the Power Surf Training
Rodrigo is a Brazilian surfer and founder of the POWER SURF movement. Throughout his 20-years of surfing experience, he has deepened his teachings in the art of ‘Surf Hacks’ throughout 4 major pillars that are Physical, Technical, Tactical and Psychological. The POWER SURF is born from his practices of yoga and self-knowledge, the art of breathing and meditating, natural gymnastic and capoeira acrobatic movements. Rodrigo teaches surfers looking to perform better from intermediate to advanced levels of surfing. He now lives in the Bask Country, working as a surf-coach at Pukas Surf Eskola and also performs physical surf training at Hurley Surf Club.
Victoria, Thai Yoga Massage & Yin Yoga
We met Victoria while working at Macaronis Resort and directly connected with her healing energy. Certified Thai Yoga massage therapist, Victoria gives a massage that is the most ideal for the sore surfer’s body – deep stretch combined to a gentle touch helps create a deep relaxation through the body and mind. Victoria will also teach daily Yin Yoga classes – a restorative yoga session to recover quicker and get ready for the next surf!
Originally from Argentina, Victoria has been in the body-mind field for the past 10-years, holding certificates of Pilate Instructors, Thai Massage therapist and certified yoga alliance teacher.
Johnny Batchelor – Iyengar Yoga Teacher
Originally from New Zealand, Johnny is a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience. He will also be the resident yoga teacher at Mahi-Mahi from May to July 2019. Johnny knows the body better than anyone else, especially the surfers’ body for being surfer himself. A key feature of the Iyengar Yoga tradition is that the teaching adapts to the needs of the individual. In Johnny’s classes, you will develop strength, stamina, suppleness, and agility in safety and in a manner appropriate to your current capabilities. As you progress you will notice not only physical and health benefits but also a developing calm, awareness, and focus, that will improve mental well-being. This will ultimately improve your surfing.
Uriel – Ocean Cinematographer
Originally from the French Bask country, Uriel has been spending his past 5-years in Indonesia, “chasing waves and light”. Traveling with the bare minimum you need to stay stoke: a camera, a surfboard and a yoga mat. His mission is to bring awareness to our Oceans and more consciousness to our planet, through creativity and art. And when waves are pumping, he’ll be there sitting in the water waiting for you to exit the barrel.
Mahi-Mahi Surf Resorthttps://mahimahisurfresort.com/
We picked Mahi-Mahi to organize this surf-retreat – not because it faces the most consistent wave of the island, known as The Peak, but most importantly because this place is a model of what eco-tourism and sustainable development should be. You can expect great foot, high-level service, and hospitality. You can also view here a video that we produced while staying at Mahi-Mahi.
Why Simeulue in May?
Situated at the North of Sumatra, the island of Simeulue is no secret for those chasing waves around Indonesia. It is less traveled than the Mentawai’s but still provides the Indo picture-perfect waves, on the right conditions. Early season usually brings clean, small to medium swells but can also bring some bigger surprises. We are familiar enough with the island to know that it doesn’t need much swell for the magic to happen. We’ll be staying at Mahi-Mahi and the A-frame wave out front will be our go-to on most days. Known as The Peak, this wave offers a good rippable wall on the right-hander and a more technical left-hander with a rewarding barrel section.
What will a typical day be like?
Our days will be planned according to what the ocean is doing. Therefore, there won’t be such thing as a typical day. Every day will be a combination of:
- Physical Preparation (Power Surf)
- Surfing* (as much as we can)
- Rest and care through Yoga and Massages
- Breathing techniques
- Thai Yoga Massage (One massage will be included for each of you)
- Video Analysis of our sessions
- A unique selection of Surf movies and Documentaries
- Eating WELL (nutritious, healthy and yummy.)
How many people will take part in the retreat?
We welcome a maximum of 8 participants. We will ensure to have an even group in terms of surf levels – which is why we ask you to describe your surf levels and define your expectations for the training in the form below.
Non-Surfers are also welcome to join as there will be plenty of space for all of us at Mahi-Mahi.
